If you’re allergic to MSG, you may go to the grocery store and check the labels looking for the words, “Monosodium Glutamate” and “MSG.” Pretty simple, right? Yes, but the trouble is it isn’t always listed under those names.

Part of the reason is because MSG comes in many different forms. Here’s a list of the names you should be aware of.

If ANY of these are listed on the packaging, then MSG is definitely present.

MSG: Monosodium Glutamate, Monopotassium Glutamate, Glutamate, Glutamic Acid

Hydrolized Protein
Hydrolized Plant Protein
Sodium Caseinate
Calcium Caseinate
Texturized Protein
Autolyzed Plant Protein
Yeast Extract
Autolyzed Yeast

Keep these names in mind on your next trip to the supermarket.

In my next post, I’ll list common food ingredients often included in products containing MSG. If these ingredients are in there, MSG is present.
